Piecing Together the LNG Market for an Oil & Gas Leader

6 Group had been working with a multinational Oil & Gas client for some time when they contacted us to deliver an extensive Market Intelligence report on how Super Majors and other Independent Operators structure their LNG Exploration & Production businesses.

This project would support the client’s overarching aim of becoming an LNG world leader within five years.

The timeline to deliver the report was short – three weeks, in fact. The client also asked 6 Group to provide organisational structures of prospective LNG competitors and examples of the types of executives in the global market who the client should aim to hire to support their LNG venture.

6 Group has worked in the LNG sector since it was established in 2006 and holds a wealth of knowledge and contacts which continues to grow to this day.

Through global market intelligence conducted by our Research & Intelligence division, we collated information of the different ways in which operators structured their respective organisations. We also provided a large-scale list of every major LNG Exploration & Production project, terminal project and plant project in the world and details of which stage each project was at.

We then mapped the HR requirements against each of the project stages to determine which projects would prevent the client from securing certain talent and when this would likely happen in the coming years.

We also produced a comprehensive talent blueprint of senior executives through to discipline-specific experts across the LNG and similar industries from which a transfer of skills would be successful. This allowed us to provide a sample of outstanding profiles of the types of world-class individuals the client would need to make an immediate impact in the LNG industry. We included the indicative remuneration packages for the client to benchmark their own remuneration packages against.

This report, together with the proposed organisation charts, were delivered to the organisation’s Senior Executive team to finally determine the structure of their new, global LNG Business. Following this, 6 Group was asked by the client to conduct Executive Search assignments for eight identified leadership positions to make this venture a success.

We developed detailed briefing documents detailing the strategy and structure of the new business and set about engaging with a multitude of exceptional candidates around the world. All candidates underwent a comprehensive competency-based assessment of functional and behavioural requirements before being formally shortlisted. All interviews were conducted by the client organisation.

OUTCOME

Within a three-month period, we were able to secure four of the seven Leadership roles, with three positions being filled internally. We completed assignments for:

  • VP Portfolio & Strategy
  • VP Performance & Operating Model
  • Head of Project Services
  • Head of Estimation & Project Director (who conducted the company’s first LNG venture; a $50billion project in East Africa)

As of September 2018, our client is in the top 10 LNG companies in the world by market share and has operations across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas.
